GENERAL SUMMARY

Assists physicians and nursing staff in the care of patients. Performs various patient care activities, including assisting with patient flow, taking vitals, giving injections, and other needs as required. Maintains nurses' stations, exam and procedure rooms. Performs various front desk and clerical duties in a medical office including such functions as complete demographic and insurance registration, charge entry, scheduling patients and/or verifying insurance information. Must be fully certified in patient registration. Where the electronic system is in use, this position will utilize the system as documented in the department and/or FPI standard operating procedure and process; and other duties assigned.

II. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Gathers and documents brief history and chief complaint in the medical record.

2. Follows established guidelines to obtain necessary testing based on the chief complaint prior to the exam. Prepares patient for examination by the health care provider.

3. Performs routine office testing, including but not limited to; phlebotomy, sweat and hydration tests, urinalysis, vision testing, hearing screening, pulmonary function testing, temperature, pulse and blood pressure.

4. Assists provider with procedures and minor surgical procedures.

5. Obtains necessary blood and urine specimens.

6. Administers and documents injections and other medications given.

7. Assists provider with clarification of patient instruction such as, diagnostic test preparation, and medication administration.

8. Exhibits compassion and empathy for all patients and families at all times.

9. Sterilizes all reusable instruments and equipment as needed.

10. Responsible for ordering and maintaining necessary supplies in clinical area.

11. Will assume lead role in absence of Supervisor.

12. Utilizes appropriately and accurately the electronic system to perform required duties.

13. Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s requirements relative to his or her population-specific and age specific needs. Provides the care needed as described in the unit/area/department policies and procedures.

14. Demonstrates knowledge of FPI and its practices, including payer contracts, policies and best practices.

15. Exhibits mid-level of skill in managing provider schedules and scheduling appointments accurately and effectively, including communicating patient responsibilities (obtaining a referral, bringing a co-pay, presenting identification and an insurance card at check in) and other events as part of the practice pre-visit activities.

16. Demonstrates the ability and understanding of FPI policy for cash collection and patient encounter, including collecting co-payments, outstanding balances and posting accurately and efficiently in GE Front Desk Module.

17. Demonstrates a working knowledge of the revenue cycle as it relates to patient encounters and obtaining/verifying patient demographic and insurance information in order to receive payment for services rendered.

18. Maintains Registration Certification to include entering accurate information in the GE Practice Management System and exhibiting a high level of understanding payer categories and Registration FSCs.

19. Schedules patients for evaluations, re-evaluations and treatment. Accepts referrals from social workers, discharge planners, physicians and physicians’ offices.

20. Obtains and inputs all pre-authorization insurance and pertinent demographic information. Information is input into the IDX scheduling system.

21. Answers telephone lines and triages calls to appropriate physician, nurse practitioner, nurse or department.

22. Reminds patients prior to coming in of appointments and any changes to their schedule
